Granite Stone Etching
Granite stones will be quarried, polished on 5 sides (front, back, left, right, and top),
etched with the messages from this site, then erected at our Year 4000 site.
The granite stones are shaped as simple blocks.
Each stone is 1.5 meters wide (4'11") on the front
and 1 meter (3'3.3") along the side.
Each stone is a total of 3 meters tall (9' 10"), but only 2 meters (6'7") appear above ground
with 1 meter (3'3") buried below ground.
Please note that messages etched below ground are not easily viewed at our site,
since dirt is in the way; however, below ground messages are easily viewed on the web site.

When etching, we use a font that is 1.2cm (1/2") tall.
Although letter width varies, typically two letters fit per centimeter of length.
Virtual Stone Etching
Virtual stones are the same as granite stones in shape and size.
However, unlike granite stones, the virtual stones will not be etched into real granite.
The virtual stones are only visible on this web site.
Messages left on virtual stones are also eligible for our annual yearbook.

Although not physically etched, virtual messages are like granite messages:
We use a font that is 1.2cm (1/2") tall.

Mark Options
When you leave your mark and purchase a message, you have options.
We do not charge for these options:
- Anonymous - Normally, your name is displayed on the web site next to your mark.
When you choose the Anonymous option, your name will not be displayed.
- Lock - Normally, your message is viewable on the web site by all visitors.
When you choose to Lock your message, you are the only user who will be allowed to view your
message on the web site.
Whether it is visible or not at the Year 4000 granite site is determined by whether your message
is above ground (visible) or below ground (not visible).
A locked virtual message is only viewable by you.
- Lost - Normally, your message is viewable on the web site by all visitors.
When you choose to make your message Lost, then nobody - including you - will be allowed to view your
message on the web site.
Whether it is visible or not at the Year 4000 granite site is determined by whether your message
is above ground (visible) or below ground (not visible).

- Commenting - Normally, your message is viewable on the web site by all visitors,
who may then choose to leave a comment about your message.
If you do not want to allow others to leave comments or have a discussion about your message,
then choose not to allow commenting.
There are two other options that typically increase the price of your message:
- Fresh Line - Normally, your message is packed onto the stone face with all the other messages.
If you would like your message to stand out more, you can choose your message to start on a fresh line.
This means your message will start against the left margin.
This also means that the end of your message will have blank space up to the right margin.
This is just like in a book, how you are used to reading text.
This unpacked look makes your message stand out because of the spacing.
This unpacked look also increases the cost of your message since cost also includes all the blank space.
You'll find that the left and right faces have narrower margins, which means less blank space,
which means lower cost.
- Paragraphs - Normally, your message is packed onto the stone face with all the other messages.
And all the text you type in as the message is cleaned up to reduce extra space.
However, if you would like your text to appear as paragraphs - such as in a book - then choose the Allow
Paragraphs option.
By allowing paragraphs, your text will not be have extra spaces (and new lines) cleaned up.
This unpacked look makes your message stand out because of the spacing.
This unpacked look also increases the cost of your message since cost also includes all the blank space.
You'll find that the left and right faces have narrower margins, which means less blank space,
which means lower cost.
Gift Certificates
There is no surcharge, processing fee, or hidden charges for gift certificates.
You specify the exact amount of the certificate that you purchase.
Once purchased, you may choose to print it out, e-mail it, or use it.
The most important part of the gift certificate is the code assigned to you.
If you e-mail the code to someone and they see it, then they could use that code in their account.
A gift certificate can only be redeemed once.
